quintana, "abc 7 news". >> dan: right on both counts. john alston continues live in downtown napa. we have been watching the river for days, how does it look tonight? >> reporter: it's fine right now after a day of rain it's stopped for the time being. behind me is a bloated napa river but well within the banks. this area is very saturated. the storm has brought some flooding in wine country. water overtopped a levee along sonoma creek where it borders the larsen family winery and this year the creek has been especially high. water is continuing to flood into a portion of the 70 acres of chardonay vines. vineyard looks more like a like in some areas. this is both good and bad. >> its nuisance but not a bad. it's good for the ground and agriculture and recharge our groundwater. it's a pain, you can see there are trees and logs and basketballs and whatever comes down the creek is what we get. >> reporter: he says it cost about $10,000 over year to remove all of that junk once the rainy season ends. they plan to rebuild the levee but that temporary solution when the air goes into flood. we're

the napa river, flood stage, 16 feet. it will go over about a foot over flood stage tonight, tomorrow morning, same holds true for the napa river. over flood stage for a temporary amount of time and then recede quickly tomorrow. we'll check out the rainfall totals and the forecast coming up. >> ama: a warning in the south bay. the creek is about to overflow its banks. we're live in men menlo park. >> this is the bridge and crews just arrive. they brought sandbags and are placing them here along the street. they've also blocked off this entire area. they're trying to keep the curious public away from the rising waters of the creek. where we are, the creek divides palo alto and menlo park, and the last time it overran its banks was back in 1998, and they think it's going to flood again tonight. within the past hour or so men lo park firefighters have been driving through neighborhoods, warning residents about the rising creek. the san mateo county security alert system is calling people. there are homes that run along -- right along the creek, and those residents are feeling a

and napa county. highway 121 and highway 12 floods after a heavy rain and then becomes a river when the high tide occurs and pours more water into the area. the road will be closed until sometime on wednesday. the rain was heavy throughout the bay area. the streets became flooded after 5:00 p.m. umbrellas were a necessary part of any wardrobe on this christmas day. the rain poured down on richmond and mcdonald avenue slowing traffic. the frontage roads were partially covered. few drivers slowed down. roads were filled with people returning from spending the holidays with family and friends. they were very busy due to twice the usual accidents. cedric emerson is ready for dry weather. >> i am actually from the bay area, so i am used to it. it is definitely rough when you drive out there on the freeways. >> are you happy to see the rain go? >> yes, i am. i am ready to get this nice weather back. >> water was the reason for the closure. but the rain was not the culprit. a watermain burst beneath the roadway. it closed because they feared the leakage could cause the roadway to collapse.

closures and now concerns that a levy could break. and flood warnings on the napa river and a major intersection closed. good evening. thank you so much for joining us. i'm ama dates. we have live team coverage of our storm wach. lilian kim is on the peninsula where a creek over ran its banks. and there was lots of flooding in the north bay where cornell bernard is. we start with leigh glaser. leigh? >> what a difference about six, eight hours makes. live doppler 7hd, very active earlier this morning beginning at 7:00 a.m. as the cold front moved through. now you could barely even tell we had any rain at all. we are looking live now, folks, and you can see the receive rain has pushed on to the south and east of the bay area. still getting a few little sprinkles here and there between morgan hill and hollister. mainly at the higher elevations, but most of the rain, or actually all of the rain has moved out of the area. we did have quite a bit of rainfall. we still have a couple of river watches. these are river watches in affect until tomorrow morning. the river right now is at 27 fe

there in the meantime, the creek continues to go down. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. >>> the napa river has crested below flood stage and is receding this morning after a flood warning was issued yesterday. that prompted the closure of the downtown riverfront promenade as a precaution. locals were confident the river would not flood and they were right. today it is predicted to crest again at 16 1/2 feet, 16 inches below flood stage. >>> in santa cruz county the water rose so fast, 40 families of felton grove had to leave their homes the san lorenzo river reached four feet over flood stage yesterday, a tree fell on power lines knocking out electricity to nearby communities. getting in and out was a challenge after heavy rains forced closure of southbound highway 9. >>> in the north bay they are still dealing with aftermath of flooding and high winds. giant fir tree split the roof of a house in forestville yesterday. power lines were damaged, nobody was hurt. lucky no one was inside the club pleasanton when a big redwood crashed through the roof, crews cut branches and cleared out debris. >>> portion of s

bernard is live in napa. a dramatic water rescue on napa river. >> much of wine country is still drying out after the storm, but the napa river as you can see here is still high, swollen with rain. we arrived moments after a man wound up in the river right underneath the third street bridge. >> a man flailing, fighting to stay afloat in the middle of the napa river. crowds on the bank watched the drama unfold. >> they were there really quick. >> we needed to get him out real quick. we got a good throw on the rope. >> the victim was pulled ashore. a ladder was brought in and the man was pulled to safety. there was no time to waste. in sonoma county, high water is still a big issue. intersection of 12 and 121 was underwater when sonoma creek overflowed its banks. today the water is still spilling into nearby vineyards. >> it looks like the ocean is out there right now. only nice thing is all the vines are dormant so there is no harm. >> dozens of roads are still flooded. george lives near sonoma creek and he is frustrated. >> every year there is more water in the creek and less creek to c

valleys of the north bay and east bay where low temperatures will drop into the 30s up at napa. santa rosa and fairfield and livermore and concord. low 40s more for most other parts. here at frontal system bringing our next bout of stormy weather. we'll start our forecast animation, 7:00 at which point it will be cloudy and no rain has expected to arrive. but by 11:00 tomorrow morning, rain developing in northern sonoma county pushing down santa rosa. then steadier rain around the north bay, beginning to push south of golden gate and by 5:00 tomorrow afternoon, widespread rainfall across most of bay area with moderate to heavy rain in many areas. showers will trail into wednesday. by 7:00 wednesday evening we'll be looking at mainly dry conditions but we will have received quite a bit of rainfall by then. totals up to 2 inches in the north bay mountains. inch and a half in the north bay. 1.2 inches in the east bay. half in peninsula and two inches in santa cruz mountains. over in the sierra, winter storm watch is in effect, four to eight inches above 4,000 feet. back here in the bay area,

is napa and santa rosa 7 and 9 degrees there. visibility limited right now in novato. they are reporting fog and less than a quarter mile. everyplace else not a problem. even though we have a cool start, we have partly cloudy conditions. new year's eve dry and chilly. if you are heading out, definitely bring a coat. we have a bright start for new year's day. even more sunshine january 1st we will take a look at the satellite radar. it shows this area of high pressure building. the storm moves south. that's what brought us all the rain yesterday so that's headed down to southern california, bringing chances of rain to them. but for us just sunny, but cool weather for us. so we will take a look at those numbers. low 50s for the most part. everyone between 50 and 53 degrees. 51 in san francisco, as well as in fremont. 52 san jose. as we head down to monterey bay, you will find low 50s there, as well, and up to 53 in santa cruz. if you are headed up to tahoe, you should be okay. there is a winter weather advisory, but it's mainly for the western part of nevada and it's going to expire within

situations on the nap a river, right now at 15 feet, and the napa river, 19 feet. so minor fluctuations on bay area rivers. how long this will stay with us? we'll take a look at the forecast. >> a wind advisory was in effect for the bay bridge, the carquinez bridge. if you didn't think the storm had a kick, take a look. this is our camera on mt. tamalpais in mill valley, pounded by rain and serious wind gusts. this storm drenched parts of the north bay. the national weather service issued a floor nod -- flashflood warning. and stoney point road is closed. sergio quintana is live at the scene. reporter: leigh mentioned the problem of the flash-flood warnings, and the other problem is the runoff. that's what happened here, this drainage culvert was overwhelmed, and the water just basically dug up the earth under the cult vert and created this sink hole. you can see the crews just managed to install these steel plates to allow cars to drive over the road. the rushing water is causing plenty of problems for road crews. the big worry here on stoney point road is more of the pavement could co

fairfield, vacaville, pulling away from american canyon and napa, all evaporating. sprinkle is all we are dealing with now. into the next couple of hours sprinkles, light rain tonight snow level 3,000 feet with this storm. with the past storm that tornado was a waterspout it came ashore near watsonville, the path was about a mile long, winds of around 75 miles per hour, damaged several greenhouses and a few trees were uprooted they found debris in some of the power poles and trees around there. very weak tornado, but very rare occurrence for us. j same is going to happen out of this system. i'll have more in just a minute. >>> state senator hill of san mateo is going to introduce bail to require repeat drunk drivers to blow into -- into a breathalyzer before they hit the road even if they are sober. he just wrapped up a news conference to announce that legislation. it would require ignition interlock devices on vehicles after a second dui conviction. the device requires a breath sample before the engine can start. >> we've tried increasing fines. we've tried to revoke licenses to dete
